What to expect at your facial
Every facial is a little different, because your skin comes first. Most start with a short chat about your skin, then cleansing, treatment steps chosen for your skin, and a finish with moisturizer. Your esthetician will tell you what each step involves. Please speak up if anything feels uncomfortable.
Before your facial
- Tell us about allergies, sensitive skin, skin conditions and any products you use, including retinol or acne treatments.
- Let us know if you are pregnant or have had a recent skin procedure.
- Skip heavy makeup if you can. We will cleanse first either way.
- If you have a skin condition, check with your doctor first.
After your facial, and how often to book
- Use sunscreen in the daytime.
- Skip strong exfoliants, retinol and acids for a day or two unless your esthetician says otherwise.
- Avoid saunas, hot tubs and heavy workouts for 24 hours.
- Keep your hands off your face and let your skin settle.
Many people book a facial every 4 to 6 weeks, or a few days before an event. Your esthetician can suggest a schedule that suits your skin. In dry Edmonton winters, a hydrating facial and a good moisturizer routine are a good match when your skin feels tight.
A simple winter skin routine at home
Cold air outside and dry heating inside can leave skin tight and dull. A few simple habits help between facials.
- Wash with lukewarm water, not hot.
- Moisturize soon after washing, while your skin is still slightly damp.
- Use a gentle cleanser, and go easy on scrubs.
- Wear sunscreen in the daytime, even on cloudy days.
If your skin is very irritated, sore or reacting to a product, stop using it and ask your doctor.
